Spanish Ballroom Back Room
In his long and highly lauded photographic career, John Gossage has consistently challenged our traditional understanding of photographic vision. His latest in a series of photobooks dating back to the groundbreaking The Pond (1984) is Looking Up Ben James – A Fable. For this project, Gossage traveled through Great Britain and Wales with photographer Martin Parr. John Jacob will discuss this project with Gossage and also introduce his own 2018 exhibition, “Diane Arbus: A box of eleven photographs.”
Gossage studied in New York with Lisette Model, Alexey Brodovich, and Bruce Davidson. He began exhibiting in 1975 with Leo Castelli and has since exhibited worldwide, including a 2015 retrospective at The Art Institute of Chicago. His work resides at the National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, among other major public and private collections.
John Jacob is the McEvoy Family Curator for Photography at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Previously, he was vice president and director of the Inge Morath Foundation and program director at the Magnum Foundation. He began his career as an artist, working with reproductive media including photography, rubber stamps, mail art, and artist’s books.
